Parts

Knees and feet in a few lines

In short

A prosthetic foot is part of every leg we make. A prosthetic knee is needed only for above knee, through-knee and hip level legs. Both come in simple, mid-range and advanced versions, and the right one depends on how far, how fast and on what ground you walk.

Feet start from about Rs 10,000 for a solid SACH foot. Mechanical knees start from about Rs 35,000, hydraulic knees from about Rs 150,000 and microprocessor knees from about Rs 2,500,000. Parts can be swapped later as you get stronger.

Who needs what

Matching the parts to the person

Expensive is not the same as right. These are the questions we ask before suggesting any part.

Simple parts make sense when

  • You walk mostly at homeA stable knee and a SACH foot are safe, need little care and are cheap to repair.
  • This is your first legLearning on simple parts is easier; you can upgrade once you know how you walk.
  • The budget has to stretchA good socket with simple parts beats a poor socket with expensive ones.
  • Repairs must be quickCommon parts are easy to replace in Karachi.

Advanced parts make sense when

  • You walk long distances every dayA carbon foot saves energy and a hydraulic knee lets you change speed.
  • You work on your feetShop floors, sites and markets reward a foot that copes with uneven ground.
  • Slopes and stairs are part of lifeHydraulic and microprocessor knees resist bending under load and feel safer.
  • You are young and activeParts that keep up with sport and running are worth the cost.

Care

Looking after knees and feet in Karachi

Dust, damp and heat are hard on moving parts.

Keep them clean

Wipe dust off the knee and keep sand out of the foot shell after the beach or a dusty road.

Service on time

Hydraulic and microprocessor knees need regular servicing; we tell you when.

Charge every night

Microprocessor knees need daily charging; plan around load-shedding with a UPS or power bank.

Listen for noises

A new click or squeak is a reason to call us before a small problem becomes a repair.

Cleaning a hydraulic knee on a workbench

Call us straight away if

  • The knee buckles or gives way without warning
  • You hear a new crack, click or grinding sound
  • The foot shell is split or the foot feels loose
  • The leg feels longer or shorter than before
  • A microprocessor knee shows an error or will not charge

Stop using a knee that gives way until we have checked it. A fall does more harm than a few days without the leg.
