Children's prosthetics that keep up with growing, running and school

Children grow out of sockets fast and wear limbs hard, and that is a good sign. We build legs and arms that can be lengthened and adjusted, fit them at a pace that suits the child, and plan the next one before it is needed.

Children's limbs

How children's prosthetics are different

In short

Children need lighter limbs, softer sockets and more frequent changes than adults. A child's leg is usually lengthened or re-socketed every year or so, and replaced every one to two years while they grow fast.

Some children are born with a limb difference; others lose a limb to an accident or illness. Either way, early fitting helps them learn to walk, crawl or play with two hands. Children's legs start from Rs 45,000 and arms from Rs 50,000.

Planning

What families tell us helps

Every child is different, but these make the first year easier.

Things that help

  • Fitting earlyFor babies and toddlers, a first leg around the age of pulling to stand, or a light hand around sitting up.
  • Play as practiceGames, balls and stairs do more than drills. We show parents how.
  • Regular checksA quick check every few months catches a tight socket before it hurts.
  • School on boardA short note for teachers about breaks and sport helps.

Things we watch closely

  • Fast growthSudden growth makes the socket tight or the leg short; call us when trousers get short.
  • Skin marksChildren do not always tell you; check the skin every evening.
  • Hard knocksFeet, covers and straps wear fast in play; repairs are part of the plan.

Your visits

How a child's first fitting usually runs

We go at the child's pace. Short visits with breaks work best.

  1. First callAge, level, and what the child is doing now.

    Day 1

  2. Gentle first visitWe meet the child, look at the limb and let them see the room.

    Week 1

  3. Cast and measureA quick cast, often with a parent holding the child.

    Weeks 1 to 2

  4. Test socketA short try-on to check comfort.

    Week 2

  5. Final limb and playFitting, then practice through play.

    Weeks 3 to 4

  6. Growth checksShort checks every few months from then on.

    Weeks 4 to 8

Children usually adapt faster than adults. Most parents are surprised how quickly their child forgets the limb is there.

Family life

Everyday tips for parents

Small routines keep children comfortable and keen to wear their limb.

Evening skin check

Look for red marks that do not fade after twenty minutes; children often will not mention them.

Watch the growth

If the limb looks short or the socket leaves deep marks, call us for a check.

Let them play

Running, climbing and cricket are exactly what the limb is for.

Talk to the school

A short word with teachers about breaks, PE and stairs helps a lot.

See your child's doctor first if

  • A wound or scar is open, weeping or smells
  • There is redness, heat or swelling that does not settle
  • Your child has a fever or seems unwell
  • Your child complains of pain at night or refuses to put weight on the limb
  • You notice a bony bump growing at the end of the stump

Children's stumps can change as bones grow; your doctor and we will keep an eye on it together.

Questions

Questions parents ask

Ask anything else on WhatsApp or call +92 337 8414002, day or night.

How much does a child's artificial leg cost in Pakistan?

A child's first below knee leg starts from Rs 45,000. Growth changes such as a new socket or a longer pylon usually cost Rs 30,000 to 90,000.

How often will my child need a new limb?

Usually a socket change or lengthening every year or so, and a new limb every one to two years while they grow fast.

When should a baby get a first limb?

Many babies get a first leg around the time they pull up to stand, and a light hand around the time they sit up and use both hands.

Will it hurt my child?

It should not. Some pressure is normal; red marks that last, or crying when the limb is on, mean we need to adjust it.

Can my child play sport?

Yes. Running, cricket and football are good for strength and balance. We adjust the limb if it is used hard.

Can a parent stay during the fitting?

Yes, always. Children are more relaxed with a parent beside them.
