Hip and through-knee legs, for the two levels that need the most care

A through-knee stump is long and strong; a hip level amputation leaves no thigh at all. Both need sockets and joints few clinics make often. We plan them slowly, test them carefully and train you until standing feels safe.

  • Free assessment
  • Extra test socket if needed

Two specialist levels

What makes these legs different

In short

In a knee disarticulation the leg is removed through the knee joint, leaving the whole thigh bone. The end can often take weight, which gives good control, but the long stump means the prosthetic knee must be slim so both knees sit level when you sit.

In a hip disarticulation there is no thigh, so the socket wraps around the pelvis and a hip joint, knee and foot hang below it. Through-knee legs start from Rs 170,000 and hip level legs from Rs 300,000.

Planning

Who these legs suit, and when we slow down

Both levels can lead to good walking. Honest goals at the start make the difference.

Usually a good start

  • A through-knee stump that takes weightMany people can press on the end of the stump, which makes standing feel secure.
  • Good trunk strengthFor hip level legs, a strong back and stomach control the whole leg.
  • Patience with trainingThese legs take more practice; families who plan for that see the best results.
  • A clear daily goalWalking around the house and out to the car is a realistic and worthwhile aim.

Where we plan more carefully

  • Heavy work on uneven groundA hip level leg is slower and uses a lot of energy; crutches may still be needed outdoors.
  • Heart or lung problemsWe ask for your doctor's view first, because walking can be tiring.
  • Skin grafts or scars at the socket edgeWe may need softer materials and an extra test socket.

Inside the leg

The parts of a hip or through-knee leg

Each part is chosen to keep the leg light enough to swing and stable enough to trust.

Through-knee socket

Shaped around the end of the thigh bone, often with a flexible inner socket so it slips over the wider knee end.

Made by us
Pelvic socket

For hip level legs, a socket that holds the pelvis and hip, fastened at the waist.

Made by us
Hip joint

Lets you sit and swings the leg forward as you walk. Fitted at the front of the socket.

Hip level only
Knee joint

A slim polycentric knee for through-knee legs; a stable knee for hip level legs.

From about Rs 60,000
Foot

A stable foot that lands safely; lighter feet make the leg easier to swing.

Light builds walk easier
Cover

A foam cover so trousers or shalwar hang evenly on both sides.

Optional
A pelvic socket with a hip joint

Your visits

How a hip or through-knee fitting usually runs

Expect more visits than for a below knee leg, especially at hip level.

  1. First call and photosLevel, date of surgery and how you move today.

    Day 1

  2. Assessment and castPelvis or thigh cast, strength and balance checks.

    Week 1

  3. First test socketStanding in a clear socket with temporary joints.

    Week 2

  4. Second test socketCommon at these levels, so the final socket is right.

    Week 3

  5. Final legJoints aligned for safe standing and sitting.

    Week 4

  6. Training and follow-upBars, frame, then short walks, with regular checks.

    Weeks 4 to 8

Hip level users usually keep training for some months. Short daily practice at home matters more than long sessions.

Daily life

Getting about with a hip or through-knee leg

Realistic goals and the right aids make everyday life easier.

Sitting

Through-knee users may notice one thigh sits slightly further forward; a slim knee keeps the difference small.

Little and often

Two or three short practice walks a day beat one long, tiring session.

Skin under the socket

Check the skin at the waist and hip every evening, and wear cotton under the socket in summer.

Keep your aids

A frame or crutches outdoors and a wheelchair for long distances are sensible, not a step back.

See your doctor first if

  • A wound or scar near the hip or thigh is open or weeping
  • There is new redness, heat or swelling
  • You feel breathless or get chest pain walking short distances
  • You have a fever or feel unwell
  • You have had a fall and the stump is painful or bruised

Your doctor's go-ahead comes first; then we plan the fitting at a pace that suits you.

Questions

Hip and through-knee questions

Ask anything else on WhatsApp or call +92 337 8414002, day or night.

How much does a hip level prosthesis cost in Pakistan?

A hip level leg with our pelvic socket and local joints starts from Rs 300,000. With imported hydraulic or microprocessor knees the price can pass Rs 3,500,000. The firm figure comes in writing after the free assessment.

How much does a through-knee leg cost?

From Rs 170,000 with a slim local knee and a SACH foot. Imported slim hydraulic knees raise it, often to Rs 650,000 or more.

Can everyone with a hip amputation walk with a prosthesis?

Not everyone, and we say so honestly. Strength, balance, heart health and motivation all matter. Some people use the leg at home and a wheelchair outside, which is still worthwhile.

Why does a through-knee leg need a special knee?

Because the thigh is full length, a normal knee would sit lower than your other knee when you sit. Slim polycentric knees keep the difference small.

How many visits does a hip or through-knee leg take?

Usually four to seven, including at least one extra test socket. Training continues after the leg is finished.

Can I sit on the floor with a hip level leg?

It is difficult with the leg on. Most users sit on a chair for meals and prayer, or take the leg off when sitting on the floor at home.
